Very thrilled. At another point in my life, I would’ve been reading this in bed under the covers with my 𝑋-𝐹𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 flashlight long after lights out. I enjoyed my time with this story, and I think it’s a great way to introduce young people to concepts adults generally tend to think are ‘too much’ or ‘too old’ for them. Mona is a fourteen year old baker, amazing at her skill, who just happens to be a wizard as well. All that she can control is dough, baked goods, but with her magic she could say, make a sentient gingerbread person. Upon walking into the bakery one very early morning, she.
Discovers a dead girl, not much older than her, and the police immediately nab Mona and place her under arrest. First lesson: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!! The city is in an uproar as the government attempts to purge all people with magic. It isn’t very many to begin with, and they aren’t hurting anyone at all, but they are different and ‘other.’ Eventually she’s released, but a war is brewing, corruption is at hand, and for some reason it’s up to a child to fix it all. This story has corrupt policy, racial profiling, and all kinds of bigotry, but the biggest point Kingfisher makes over and over is that this.
City (land, kingdom, whatever you want to call it) has passed on its problems and biases for so long that now it’s up to literal children to fight and fix things. It shouldn’t be up to young people to tell the grown adults what the hell is wrong, and it damn sure shouldn’t be kids fighting and risking their lives for change. I’m thinking right now of people like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai who shouldn’t have had to be arrested, starved, or shot in the face to get anyone to listen and for adults to step in. In true Kingfisher style though, there’s humor and there are moments to.
Breathe, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Mona has a wonderful family in her aunt and uncle, and makes a good friend in a boy named Spindle, but this story is definitely making a Statement. I wish with our characters (outside of Mona), we’d gotten a bit more depth and development. The person who winds up doing a Huge Thing near the end, has little to no characterization at all, but I do wish I could get to know more about her, how she discovered her particular wizardry. Scenes sometimes felt rushed through, or they would end abruptly, and I was always left a little curious. But you know.
What they say: leave them wanting more. Throughout the book, Mona never quite believes in herself, and even at the end it doesn’t seem like she’s super confident. She devalues herself a ton, but she is capable of so much. It feels like she started to get that, but then the book was over. A sequel or a series of books set in this world would be fun, I would love it if Kingfisher felt like fleshing this out, because it does set up a lot of potential to find other wizards who scattered due to danger. Overall, I’m glad I read this; it was cute and important, and has.
